Perhaps the greatest tournament on
the Golfing calender, The Masters, is fast coming to an end for this year at
Augusta. Although there isn't much play left now, yesterday’s play, typically
movers day, didn't let down.
Many unexpected headlines arose,
cementing why we as golf fans love The Masters so much, that element of
complete unpredictability that makes it so compelling to watch. Yesterday saw
the slightly shocking late double bogeys from the leader (and last years
winner) Jordan Spieth to keep the field tight, Rory McIlroy experienced an
unforeseen fall from the leaderboard to effectively withdraw his challenge at
this years masters, Langer rolling back the years to be in contention for the ‘Green
Jacket’, and American rookie Smiley Kaufman sneaking under the radar into
second at his first Masters.
Spieth started off the day with
McIlroy hot on his trail for the coveted green jacket, but it soon went drastically
downhill for Rory… literally. Spinning the ball off the green from a bunker
shot set the tone for the Northern Irishman, and he could never recover. With
the driver not being at its pin point precision best he fell way back from the
lead giving himself an extremely unlikely shot at the green jacket as today's
play gets underway.
Spieth seemed to be in cruise control after a cool birdie run saw him back to a three shot lead, seeming
unmatchable. Augusta never backs down, combined with Spieth’s putter going a
bit cold, he made double bogey at 11th and at the closing hole. With
his awful driving, missing the fairways to find trees on numerous occasions and cries of fore,
I think he’s done quite well to still be in the lead. Maybe with some late
night range work he can straighten it out and propel himself to another Green Jacket,
becoming the youngest player to win three majors in the last 93 years of Golf.
The surprise men of the day, the
crafty old German, Langer and the American rookie Kaufman. Smylie Kaufman, in
his first professional appearance at the Masters saw himself finish second
after a brilliant 69. Langer isn't far off after rolling back the years and
finding himself tied third at -1 after a fantastic round that saw him chip in from
the fringe to keep his birdie train rolling. Further back and definitely within
reach, especially as the weather calms down, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson, Danny Willet and Westwood will have high hopes of putting the pressure on Spieth for that Green Jacket. If Spieth drives
well and gets that putter going, someone will have to shoot a fantastic round
to take him from the mantle of first position.
Looking 'fore'ward to great
viewing!!!!!!
